He was a surgeon prior to his enlistment and was of the Presbyterian faith. 

William received both his primary and secondary educations in Clinton and following this he moved to Toronto and enrolled into University College and here he achieved his Bachelor of Arts in Medicine 1887-1891. Following this he then achieved his Bachelor of Medicine Degree 1892-1896. In 1906 he began to practice medicine at the Toronto General Hospital and at the Staff Facility of Medicine at the University of Toronto. In the spring of 1915 he was appointed to No. 4 General Hospital at the University of Toronto. He then enlisted into the Canadian Corps on      April 1, 1915 and went into No. 4 University of Toronto General Hospital. While he was in Toronto he had joined the Queen;s Own Rifles of Canada with the rank of Private.                                                                                                  On May 16, 1915 he embarked from Canada on the SS Corinthian and once ashore at Liverpool on May 27, 1915 was assigned on June 17, 1915 to duties with the Director of Medical Services based at Aldershot - Hampshire. At the beginning of July he was assigned back to No. 4 General Hospital - Shorncliffe - Kent.                                        He and and the No. 4 General Hospital embarked from England bound for Alexandria - Egypt and from Alexandria the embarked from Egypt on November 7, 1915 on the Hospital Ship Carisbrook Castle with No. 4 General Hospital and arrived in Salonika - Macedonia.                                                                                                                    He then worked at the front with No. 4 General Hospital until March 30, 1917 at which time he was assigned to temporary duty with No. 28 Casualty Clearing Station until May 12, 1917 when he returned to No. 4 General Hospital.   Then, he was appointed to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with the Canadian Army Medical Corps on          May 1, 1917.                                                                                                                                                            Lieutenant Colonel Malloch was then ordered back to England to report to the War Office on July 20, 1917 and at the end of the month he boarded an Italian transport ship and he embarked from Salonika and he arrived in England on August 11, 1917. Upon his arrival he was posted to the Ontario Military Hospital - Orpington - Kent. His next posting took place on September 24th when he was attached to No. 16 Canadian General Hospital - Orpington - Kent. Approximately two weeks later on October 7th he was posted to No. 4 Canadian General Hospital - Basingstoke - Hampshire.                                                                                                                                        When he was assigned to temporary duty at No. 28 Casualty Clearing Station in Macedonia he had to do some very strenuous work and while there suffered a ventral hernia and once back in England a Canadian Medical Board on January 28, 1919 transferred Lieutenant Colonel Malloch to the Canadian Army Medical Corps Casualty Company. He then embarked from England on January 29, 1919 and arrived back in Canada at Halifax on February 5, 1919. Very shortly after his returning to Canada he became ill with pneumonia and pleurisy on February 9, 1919 and in nine short days on February 18th, Lieutenant Colonel Malloch succumbed to his illness.                                    Lieutenant Colonel Malloch is honoured and remembered on the University of Toronto Roll of Service.
