Private Wicks and the 161st Battalion travelled to Halifax, boarded the S.S. Lapland, set sail from Canada and arrived in Liverpool on November 11, 1916.
On March 23, 1918, Private Wicks was absorbed into the 4th Canadian Reserve Battalion at Witley Camp – Surrey and then short days later he was posted to the 1st Battalion bases at Bramshott – Hampshire. He arrived overseas in France at Canadian Base Depot on March 29th. On April 3, 1918 he joined his unit in the field.
On May 23rd he was Struck off Strength from the 1st Battalion due to illness He had contacted lobar pneumonia days earlier and he was taken to No. 54 British Casualty Clearing Station – Aire and was diagnosed as being dangerously ill.
Private Wicks died from lobar pneumonia on May 30, 1918 just nine days after becoming ill.
