Private Westlake and his comrades from the 161st Battalion sailed out of Halifax harbour and arrived in England on November 11, 1916.
From the time of his arrival in England until the end of February 1918 he was stationed at Witley Camp – Surrey at which time he went overseas and in the middle of March he joined his unit in the field.
During the months of April / May of 1918 Private Westlake was reported ill with a diagnosis of indigestion. He was admitted to No. 4 Canadian General Hospital in Basingstoke – Hampshire and it was here the medical personnel stated he had Nephritis.  In the latter part of September he was invalided back to Canada.
On November 21st 1918 he was discharged from the Canadian Corps for health reasons.
In April of 1918 his symptoms were back pain, nausea and vomiting. When he was diagnosed both his kidneys were tender and his urine contained blood.
The cause of his death was severe and extreme Nephritis.
