In a short period of time after his arrival in England on November 11, 1916 he was transferred to the
58th Battalion and left for overseas in France on November 30, 1916. He and his brother William both are in the 161st and go to France on the same day. Once in France, he arrives at the 3rd Canadian Engineers on December 23rd and this would probably have been the last time he saw his brother. He arrives at his unit on January 4, 1917.
Private Grant was killed in action near Maison Blanche which was in the vicinity of Rouen.
The weather was dry but frosty with medium observation available and winds from east / south-east at 10mph.
The Battalion war diaries state that a man was killed on January 16th from the effects of heavy enemy fire onto the Battalion trenches. The diaries also state that one man was killed on January 23rd while out on a work party. These were the only days with casualties in the time period of January 21, 1917.
The Brigade diaries state that on January 16th the situation was quiet along the front and there were no casualties. For January 21st the diaries of the Brigade state there were no casualties suffered. On January 23rd the Brigade diaries state there were no casualties.
Very poor diary by the 58th Battalion.
