From researching William's military file, we believe he received his primary and secondary school educations in Goderich - Ontario. He then went on to enroll in the University of Toronto School of Dentistry and graduated with his degree shortly before he enlisted into the Canadian Corps. He is honoured and remembered on the University of Toronto Roll of Service.  When he enlisted he went into the 26th Battery of Canadian Field Artillery. Near the end of June in 1915, he received his commission into the Canadian Army Dental Corps and immediately transferred to that branch of the Canadian Corps.
Our research tells us that at some point in the middle of August 1915 he embarked from Canada and once overseas in England was posted to St. Martin's Plain - Kent on August 24th. At the end of October he is posted to the 2nd Brigade of the Canadian Mounted Rifles and assigned to the 2nd Canadian Field Ambulance.
In the third week of January 1916 he is posted to No. 1 Canadian Field Ambulance and for a period of time he divides his time between both Field Ambulances. He then goes to district Depot No. 5 in Boulogne before being posted on June 1st to No. 3 Canadian General Hospital - Boulogne and very shortly after that posting he goes to No. 13 British Stationary Hospital - Boulogne. As November draws to a close he leaves the continent and is posted for duty in London. In the middle of December he goes to Brighton - Sussex to a dental clinic and here he begins to care for the men of the Canadian Corps.
On March 19, 1917, Captain MacNevin is admitted as a patient into No. 8 Canadian Stationary Hospital in Hasting - Sussex with pneumonia and this diagnosis is upgraded to chronic bronchitis. On May 11th he is discharged from hospital and during that same month he is invalided back to Canada on the SS Olympic. Upon his arrival in Canada he goes to Gravenhurst - Ontario and is admitted as a patient into the Gravenhurst Sanitorium. Between December 12, 1917 - January 2, 1918 he was an outpatient. One month later on February 3, 1918 Captain MacNevin passes away from the effects of tuberculosis.
Canadian Army Dental Corps personnel performed the following functions.....a) dental inspections of all Canadian military personnel arriving in England....b) dental inspections of all Canadian personnel returning to Canada.... c) provisions for normal preventative dental care....d) treatment of wounds and trench mouth....e) special care for reconstructive surgery.
Dentist while in the field worked mainly in Field Ambulances, Casualty Clearing Stations, General and Stationary Hospitals, at Base Camps along with Forestry and Railway Units.
