John left Canada on the S.S. Lapland and arrived in England on March 26, 1916. He then transferred to 2nd Tunnelling Company and went into France and joined them in the field on June 29, 1916. Then he was discharged to the Base Depot located in Boulogne on September 24, 1916 and from there is attached to the Canadian Corps Composite Company with “flat feet” on December 25, 1916. Early in February 1919, following the end of the war he transferred to Canadian Engineers Pool. He was then admitted to Military Hospital Berridge Road in Nottingham with influenza. In mid April of 1919 he goes to a Convalescent Hospital based in Epsom, is discharged and moves on to General Depot at Seaford on May 3, 1919.
He departs from England for Canada on the S.S. Caronia and arrives July 2, 1919.
He is discharged from the service of the Canadian Expeditionary Force on July 4, 1919.
John was hospitalized with tuberculosis and abscesses on his arms and hips and died in hospital in Clinton.
