The 161st sailed from Halifax on the S.S. Lapland on November 1, 1916 and arrived in England on November 11th. The Battalion was based at Witley Camp - Surrey.
Private Aitchison left the 161st Battalion on November 27, 1916 and joined the 58th Battalion on November 29, 1916 in the field at Valley Post in France and then in in mid - February of 1917 while the Battalion was positioned at Ecoivres he was admitted to No. 30 Casualty Clearing Station.
Private Aitchison died from broncho-pneumonia at No. 30 British Casualty Clearing Station - Aubigny. His family had previously been informed that he was dangerously ill.
