Private Lawson along with his comrades in the 161st Battalion left Ontario and travelled to Halifax where they boarded the S.S. Lapland for the journey to England and they arrived at Liverpool on November 11, 1916.
Upon their arrival the 161st went to Whitley Camp - Surrey for further training and to await for the time when they would go overseas and join their units.
Private Lawson had contacted septicaemia (blood poisoning) and this resulted in his death at Whitley Camp - Surrey. He died at 1:55 pm in No, 1 Sick Detention Hut.
